A Labour Day Parade on Victoria Street, Hamilton on 27 October 1913. Hamiltonians line the street as horse and carts turn into Hood St in front to the BNZ (The Bank in 2009).
"The Times they are a Changin'".
100 years ago Hamilton was a fresh new town and the hub of trade in the Waikato. Victoria Street, Hamilton was well and truly established as the main shopping thoroughfare. It's footpaths paved and the street a sandy wide strip that met the demands of horse, buggy, bicycle and the automobile.
The photographs scanned as part of this collection are the work of two photographers. Their legacy to the people of Hamilton is a virtual time capsule of how our city looked and what Hamiltonian's were like before World War 1.
Many of the buildings that feature in these photographs still stand nearly 100 years later. I have photographed them from similar angles for you to compare how the years and successive owners have treated them.
